Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Marietta Owner’s Guide

Clopay cable and drum replacement in Marietta typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we carry Clopay-compatible cables and drums on the truck for most standard 7-foot and 8-foot residential doors. You’ll usually discover the failure visually: a frayed cable dangling from the drum, a door hanging crooked in the opening, or a loud snap followed by the door refusing to move. Marcus Deller and our crew replace these parts same-day in most Marietta neighborhoods, including the Kennesaw Avenue corridor near the historic square.

The cables work as a pair with the drums, which are the grooved spools mounted above the door on the torsion tube. When one fails, it rarely fails alone. You’re looking at a $130-$250 installed price because the job involves clamping the torsion system, removing tension, replacing the cable and usually the drum as a set, then re-balancing the door. We quote that range before touching anything, per Clause 1 of The Haven Standard.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

This replacement work applies to Clopay residential sectional doors that use a torsion spring system: the Gallery series, Coachman series, Classic wood and steel lines, Reserve wood doors, and the Value series. The compatibility gotcha with Clopay is the drum sizing. Clopay uses several drum profiles depending on door height, cable length, and spring wire diameter. A 7-foot door takes a different drum than an 8-foot door, and high-lift setups use flat drums with a different cable path entirely. Put the wrong drum on and the cable stacks unevenly, binding within a few cycles.

To identify what you need, look at the door’s ID sticker, usually on the left vertical track or the bottom section. It lists the model number and sometimes the drum part number. If the sticker is gone, we measure the existing drum’s diameter and groove count, and match the cable length to the door height. For Clopay specifically, we stock OEM drums and cables plus quality aftermarket equivalents that match the OE spec. For older Clopay doors where the OEM part is discontinued, we source the aftermarket version that preserves the original lift geometry rather than forcing a generic fit.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Clopay. We stock parts for all eight major brands, and on the truck you’ll also find LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie components so a multi-issue call doesn’t mean two visits.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • Frayed or unraveling cable: You can see individual wire strands separating near the drum or along the vertical run. This means the cable has been scraping against a worn drum edge or the door is out of balance, loading one cable more than the other.
  • Door hanging crooked or uneven in the opening: One cable has stretched or slipped off the drum, so one side is carrying more weight. You’ll see a visible gap at the bottom of the door on one side.
  • Loud snap followed by the door not moving: The cable broke under tension. This is a sudden failure, and the door will either lock up or slam down if a spring is also compromised.
  • Cable slack in the track or coils of cable piled at the drum: The drum’s groove has worn smooth or the cable jumped track. You might see loose cable wrapped around the torsion tube instead of seated in the groove.
  • Grinding or scraping when the door operates: A worn drum or cable rubbing against the drum’s outer flange. Left alone, it will cut through the cable over a few dozen cycles.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range (Marietta)
Cable replacement (single side) $130-$180
Cable and drum replacement (both sides) $180-$250
Add spring replacement if needed $180-$340

What drives the range is whether we’re replacing one cable or both cables plus drums, and whether the springs show wear while we’re in there. Clopay cables fail in pairs more often than not because they share the same load history. If one snapped, the other is usually close behind. We’ll tell you what we measured and photographed before quoting.

Every job includes the parts, labor, and the documented photo record of the failed component and the finished work. Clause 4 of The Haven Standard is the reason we photograph the failed part before quoting a replacement. You see it, we walk you through it, then we do the work. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies: if the repair isn’t right, we make it right.

Cables and drums operate under the full tension of the torsion spring system. That stored energy is enough to cause a serious injury if released incorrectly. We don’t publish step-by-step instructions for this repair, and neither should anyone else. What you can safely do is inspect: look at the cable condition, note whether the door is crooked, and check if both cables are seated in their drum grooves. Take photos. That’s useful information for us.

What you shouldn’t do is touch the bottom bracket bolts, the drum set screws, or anything attached to the torsion tube. Those fasteners are under load. A sudden release can spin the drum and whip the cable. When you call (470) 486-7771, we’ll ask what you’re seeing, give you a price range over the phone based on your Clopay model and door height, and schedule the visit. We write the final price before any work starts.
